Developing an App? You Might Want to Reconsider your Strategy
Developing an app? You may want to reconsider your strategy. If you’re considering being an Indie developer of an app, you might want to know the stats first. Studies done by Sensor Tower show that the top 1% of global publishers accounted for about 80% of the total app downloads, 29.6 billion, in the 3rd quarter of 2019. That means that just 6 billion, or 20%, of downloads were left for the rest of the publishers. If you are not part of the top 1% of publishers than your average downloads during the quarter were 7,650. This data should not come as a surprise to most as the top 1% have more access and resources including marketing on Facebook and Youtube.
From 2014-2018, more apps have become available on the App Store and Google play but the number of these apps that were able to achieve at least 1,000 installs has been declining. More apps are becoming available but there are less people downloading these new apps.
If you wanted to focus just on the gaming apps, 9.1 billion out the the total 11.1 billion downloads went to the top 1% of publishers. The 1,080 out of a total of 108,000 game app developers were able to dominate the market with 82% of the downloads.
Breaking it down by revenue, it gets even worse for Indie developers. Out of the $22 billion in revenue made in the quarter, $20.5 billion was generated by 1,526 publishers. This means that the other $1.5 billion was split among 151,056 publishers.
The gap continues to grow between indie developers and the top 1%. Are you considering developing an app? Do these statistics help you think about your business plan more strategically?
